Local Fruitfly Outbreak

The Agriculture Victoria website has listed that a Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) outbreak was declared in Koraleigh on 1 February 2017.

This is very unfortunate for both home gardeners and commercial growers in the BKIT area.

The BKIT has made contact with a representative from the Greater Sunraysia Pest Free Area to obtain detailed information regarding measures that can be taken to manage QFF.  These measures will be different for those with a couple of host trees, to those with a ‘mini’ orchard of a dozen or more trees to those growing fruit on a commercial scale.  We are trying to establish whether those with a couple of trees can be included in the existing urban control program where traps are made available at no charge.

As soon as information is available the BKIT will forward it to all ratepayers in the hope that we can make a united effort to evict/manage QFF in Koraleigh.

In the meantime, I urge ALL landholders to remove any fallen fruit or very ripe fruit on their trees to minimise the number of fruit flies that hatch while we obtain information on control measures.
